Going for Gold
"For several years now I have tried to raise some money for various MS Societies – my wife was diagnosed with MS about 10 years ago. This year I raised money by cycling the Chiltern 100 Sportive, which is a challenging 107 mile cycle ride up and down the Chiltern Hills. It required many weeks of training and. I also set myself the target of trying to gain a Gold Award for completing the course in under 6 hrs 10 mins (the target for 40-50 year olds).
Through friends and family I was very pleased to raise around £1800, I also had the personal satisfaction of managing to complete the course quickly enough to scrape a Gold Award – without short cuts!
I have much admiration for the work of staff and volunteers at the Chilterns MS Centre and hope that the money raised is beneficial.
Three Peaks and a 9 year old

Diabetes and Multiple Sclerosis normally have nothing in common, but when you get together a nine year old boy keen on raising funds for his Mum, who is affected by MS and diabetes, and his diabetic Uncle, anything can happen!
When Luke Sherring-Lucas overheard his Dad and Uncle Russ talking about climbing the three highest mountains in Britain he jumped on the bandwagon and asked to go along. Not content with just getting to the top he said he would get sponsored for his Mum, “as she has MS and needs looking after.”
As an experienced hill walker, Luke’s Dad Bruce agreed to guide them on their quest. The late May bank holiday saw the realisation of their dreams. An arduous ten hour round trip, in uncommonly bright weather, saw Ben Nevis conquered. Even in May “The Ben” was still capped in snow and, having donned his Halton MS Centre T Shirt a high altitude snow fight ensued.
Following a well deserved nights rest, the team progressed to Cumbria where the brooding mass of Sca Fell Pikes lurked above a very thick layer of cloud. Undeterred, Luke trudged off into the gloom, followed very reluctantly by his Dad who had experienced this type of weather in the Lake District and knew it would probably mean turning back before reaching the top. Just as visibility reached zero and with the quest in jeopardy, a guardian angel appeared out of the mist in the guise of a gentleman carrying a GPS unit. This clever device takes over when a map and compass becomes ineffective and guides you via satellites to your destination. So Sca Fell Pike was conquered with the help of modern technology and a great deal of good fortune.
Last but by no means least we embarked upon Snowdon. Amazingly, this mountain decided not to hide from us and we were able to reach its summit without drama.
A tired but very happy Luke had made his dream come true and raised £600 for the Halton MS Centre. All in all a great way to spend a half-term.

Rotary Club of High Wycombe

Celia Blakeway-Phillips receives £500 presented by Tony Sherrard, President of the Rotary Club of High Wycombe, at their lunchtime meeting on 18th March on behalf of the Centre.
Art Exhibition and Sale - An Artistic Triumph!
A third very successful art exhibition and sale was again organised by Dagny - one of our Senior Physiotherapists between 7th- 9th March. Fifty artists had their works on display in the transformed therapy Centre, of which, seventeen were new artists this year. Dagny exclaimed 'there was a huge variety of subject matter and price and it was a very joyous occasion and one of those fundraising occasions when everyone is a winner'.
This year the event commenced with a preview evening hosted by Jenny Hopkirk, Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Buckinghamshire and one of Chilterns MS Centre's Patrons. The evening was also attended by another Patron - The Earl of Buckinghamshire, as well as 200 guests. So far £7,500 net has been raised but monies are still coming in and there is still some art at the Centre to be bought. All the staff, patients and Trustees really gave their all and worked very hard to make it all happen. A special mention must go to Judith Idris-Evans and Anne Prendergast (a retired CMSC Physiotherapist) for raising a fabulous £825 on the tea and cake stall and also to all the cake makers for providing so many delicious offerings.
A great team effort - thank you to all!
