Acupuncture is part of traditional Chinese medicine. The aim of the treatment is to restore the body’s energy by recreating balance in the body and thereby releasing ‘Qi’, the life energy.
The acupuncture treatment works hand in hand with the other physiotherapy treatments.
At Chiltern MS Centre we treat people with problems such as:
- Bladder problems (frequency and urgency)
- Fatigue related to MS
- Pain in the body due to muscle imbalance
- Headaches related to MS
- Sensory problems
Monica Thornton is our qualified acupuncturist. She joined the team at the Chilterns MS Centre in 2000.
I qualified as a physiotherapist in 1977 and have specialised in neurological rehabilitation since 1980. I spent the first 20 years of my career at the Lund University Hospital in Sweden.
In 1993 I qualified as an acupuncturist and over the years I have used acupuncture as a complimentary treatment to my neuro physiotherapy. I now work solely as an acupuncturist.
As I came from a busy acute hospital setting it is very refreshing to work in a friendly, warm, homely workplace. I enjoy working with my skilled colleagues in an environment where patients needs are always priority.
Chiltern MS Centre gives me a unique opportunity to continue concentrating on neuro patients but in a different way while still utilising my experience and knowledge in neurology.
