Carers
The Carers Support Group
The Carers Support Group is a recent addition to the services already offered by the MS Centre. This service was set up because we are acutely aware that those who support someone with a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis also require, from time to time, some support themselves. Our carers cover a broad age range from children to pensioners and come from Bucks, Herts, Beds, Berks, Oxon and Middlesex.
What does the carers support group at the Chilterns MS Centre offer?
- An opportunity for carers to come together in an informal, relaxed and friendly setting to share experiences and knowledge
- Talks on topics specific to multiple sclerosis
- Regular meditation/relaxation sessions
- Events, like the carers information day, where those who attend have an opportunity to relax and enjoy some therapy and a buffet lunch
- One to one counselling
- Relationship counselling
- A sitting service (where appropriate)
- Travelling costs (where appropriate)
- Courses of complementary therapy e.g. reflexology, massage
Please see below for our carers programme of events
Saturday 3rd September - 1.30 to 3.30pm
“Money Matters” – Katie Edwards (Solicitor) and
Luisa Lepore (Paralegal)
Katie and Luisa from New Law Solicitors will be discussing the issues surrounding paying for care. This is a complex area and one that is a cause of concern for many. Katie and Luisa will talk you through the ways in which one can protect their assets from paying for care.. They will also look at what assets can be taken into consideration in the assessment carried out by the Local Authority and also the availability of Continuing Health Care, This will be an interactive session so please feel free to bring along any questions you may have.
Saturday 15th October – 1.30 to 3pm
“Motability – Background, Services to Customers and Future Plans” Tony Rogers
Tony Rogers is Governance & Planning Manager at Motability and has 15 years experience working for the charity.
His presentation will cover not only the basics of the Scheme, but also how customers can receive financial help from Motability towards their vehicles and adaptations. Tony is currently working on the impact of the Government’s proposals to replace the Disability Living Allowance with Personal Independence Payments and can answer questions on this topic.
Saturday 5th November – 1.30 to 3.30
“Moving and Handling” – James Peacock
James Peacock, Manual Handling Facilitator from Total Training will be demonstrating the most up to date equipment and methods designed to minimise the risk to carers and the person they are helping when moving and handling. It is no coincidence that Physiotherapists, by law, have to regularly attend these courses to make sure that they are able to protect themselves and their patients. However, carers are expected to take on this task without training. Often it is only after a back/neck/shoulder injury that a carer seeks help with equipment and training but with foresight and information you can get appropriate help at the appropriate time. This is an active workshop which will allow you to try out equipment for yourselves so please wear leisure clothing.
Saturday 3rd December - 1.00 to 4.00 pm
“Festive Carers Day”
1pm Buffet Lunch from 1pm onwards
2pm – 4pm Taster sessions of complementary therapies (reflexology, massage and Indian head massage). No need to book in advance.
Also present on the day will be representatives from Carers Bucks , Centre Physiotherapists and others. Please let me know beforehand if you have any special dietary requirements.
To help with the cost of lunch and therapy we suggest a donation of £5.00. Thank you
