Reflexology
Reflexology is a therapeutic technique from traditional Chinese medicine. It involves applying pressure to the endpoints of the meridians, or channels, through which energy flows through the body. These points are on the soles of the feet and correspond with specific areas and organs of the body. Many people with MS feel the benefit of reflexology.

Acupuncture
Studies show that, when used in conjunction with other modalities, acupuncture can provide effective relief for many MS symptoms. Because MS damages myelin in the central nervous system, the disease interferes with messages between the body and the brain. Acupuncture can mediate the effects of this disease because it releases endorphins and peptides in the brain, which modulate sensory information between the brain and body. It has also been shown to help with spasticity.

Yoga
Yoga is one of the most popular therapies for MS, and thousands can testify to how much it helps. Done properly, yoga calms the mind and energises the body. Yoga helps with breathing correctly; increases energy, counteracts fatigue, and lifts mood and depression. It has a good effect on the endocrine glands, the circulatory and respiratory systems, and improves well being. Yoga also helps the body's self-healing mechanisms.

Pilates
Pilates helps provide core stability to the trunk and pelvis, thus improving balance, muscle strength and bladder & bowel control. Anecdotally it also gives a feeling of well being.

MS Nurse
The Chilterns MS Centre is particularly pleased to have acquired the regular services of a dedicated MS Nurse, who is typically attached to a local Consultant Neurologist. The nurse makes regular visits to the Centre to meet with patients on an appointment basis. She will give advice on medical matters relating to multiple sclerosis including, but not limited to; DMDs - disease modifying drugs, incontinence, spasticity and diet. When not at the Centre the nurse is contactable by telephone.
