Background

The Chilterns MS Centre is embarking on an exciting new venture with the aim of developing new and existing income lines to the charity. This will involve the setting up of a trading subsidiary for the charity that will deliver chargeable Health, Fitness and Wellbeing services out of the Centres state of the art facilities in Wendover. This will build on the centres excellent and growing reputation for clinical excellence. All profits will go back to the Chilterns MS Centre charities core MS service delivery. The Centre comprises of individual and group treatment, exercise and meeting areas along with a Hydrotherapy Pool. Services will include initially a Clinic (Physio, Exercise, and Hydrotherapy), Exercise Referral Scheme and Group Exercise, as well as other areas in future.

The Clinic initially will work on a musculoskeletal and symptoms management basis, rather than long-term care and support like the Chilterns MS Centres core MS services. Due to the Centres reputation we naturally get a lot of enquiries and referrals for people with Neurological Conditions, and we will be looking to support these in the Clinic on a symptoms management basis. The Clinic will work closely where applicable with other services within the new venture, particularly the Exercise Referral Scheme.

Role Outline

We are always open to speaking to Physiotherapists about opportunities. We are specifically keen to speak to Physiotherapy with Hydrotherapy qualifications. The skill is required for the development of the new venture but in future could involves support of the Centres core MS Services. We would also be keen to hear from suitably qualified and experienced Hydrotherapists from other disciplines.

Opportunities inside of the new venture will mean working with in an exciting multidisciplinary team of Therapists that will deliver services as part of the out-of-hours Clinic. The team will develop over time to include other Physiotherapists, Exercise Therapists and Therapists of other specialist disciplines as the new venture grows.

Dependent on relevant suitability the Hydrotherapist will complete assessments, diagnosis, and treat patients that are either self-referred or referred by their GP or other Clinician. The Hydrotherapist, where applicable, will work with Clinical Lead to administer treatments and ongoing assessment of a patient as they progress through their treatment plan. They will make sure that the clinics patient pathway is followed, while maintaining high standards of service to patients.

Team will include other Physiotherapists of various levels, Hydrotherapist, Exercise Therapists and other Therapists of other specialist disciplines as the new venture Develops.

The Clinical Lead will complete assessments, diagnosis, and treating patients that are either self-referred or referred by their GP or other Clinician. They will also be overseeing the clinics patient pathway, maintaining standards and assisting in the line management of junior practitioners. Work closely with the Healthcare Services Manager, as well as leads and instructors of other services provided by new venture and charity. The Clinical Lead will also have opportunity to advise and take a lead role in the development of services provided by the new venture.

Candidates will be required to have a high level of expertise at Band 7 competence for either Muscular Skeletal or Neuro Rehab, with experience in the other specialty.

The core scheme will be delivered to people with various medical conditions or risk factors, and will be graded according to the complexity of their condition and level of ability.  Each person attending the course will have been referred to the scheme by their GP or a healthcare professional, and completed a screening with the Health Promotions Coordinator. Sessions will be run before 9am and after 4pm.

Additional opportunities will be available for relevantly qualified Exercise Specialists for specific sessions and courses for more complexed conditions or issues.

Sessions will be run before 9am and after 4pm, and any time at weekends. Focus of classes will be dependent on the qualifications of the instructor and demand. However, could include Pilates, Yoga, Circuits, Functional Fitness, Strength and Toning, Core Strength, various exercise to music sessions,  and other more innovative sessions focus on peoples issues and niggles. Size of the classes will be dependent on the focus of the sessions from small group (6-8 people) to larger group sessions (10-15 people).

There could also be opportunities for relevant qualified staff to deliver small group water based exercise sessions. There will be opportunities for suitable people to support the Exercise Referral scheme and Clinic, developing skills and experience in these areas.

This state of the art rehab centre has a wonderful opportunity for an enthusiastic newly qualified physiotherapist offering a 6 -9 month position working in the Neuro Rehab team with on the job and structured competence training provided. This would fit a new graduate’s professional portfolio as a neuro rotation providing an excellent platform on which to develop.

The Chilterns Multiple Sclerosis Centre opened in September 2012 and is situated in the wonderful Chiltern Hills in the vicinity of Wendover, Buck’s. This state of the art neuro rehab Centre provides care management on an outpatient basis for all stages of Multiple Sclerosis. Boasting; hydrotherapy pool, purpose built neuro-physio treatment areas, including dedicated treatment rooms, gymnasium space with additional Multidisciplinary Treatment suits’. The Centre provides innovative multidisciplinary treatment strategies aimed at providing meaningful support in line with NICE guidelines to over 300 patients per week. The Centre is one of the most modern and largest MS Centres in the country, providing, hydrotherapy, specific care management for patients who are in need of ambulatory support. Balance training & re-education in the form of a structured falls prevention course, including progressive use of the Nintendo Wii for those patients striving to maintain and or, regain walking independence. Recent addition of a Pilates reformer programme is also intended to further support gait analysis for those patients in need of targeted exercise. Occupational Therapy is offered to support patients with known cognitive, and fatigue related problems and the introduction of aids to daily living linked to adapting lifestyles at home and work.
