According to a report published by the MS Society, it is estimated there are over 130,000 people with MS in the UK, and that each year nearly 7,000 people are newly diagnosed. This means around 1 in every 500 people in the UK lives with MS, and each week over 130 people are diagnosed with MS.

For MS Awareness Week this year, 25 April to 1 May, the Chilterns MS Centre asked its members what advice they would give their younger, newly diagnosed, selves. Here are some of their responses.

Advice to my newly diagnosed self: "It’s a life changing diagnosis so take the time to inform yourself about MS and treatment options available to you, and start treatment asap even if, overall, you feel fine." - Patricia Munn

Advice to my newly diagnosed self: "It isn’t as scary as it may all seem. You will be supported every step of the way by a healthcare team, and the lovely people at the Chilterns MS Centre. Some days are harder than others, but just take them as they come." - Lisa-Marie Young

Advice to my newly diagnosed self: "Listen to your body, rest when you need to and don’t feel guilty about having to change plans - true friends will understand." - Anonymous

Advice to my newly diagnosed self: "Find out all you can about MS and you will see it's not a life threatening disease. The majority of people can live a relatively normal life with changes to lifestyle. Get plenty of rest and go to an excellent Centre like ours to have all the support and treatment you need, and meet socially with likeminded people." - Lynsey Street

Advice to my newly diagnosed self: "When I was first diagnosed I was scared and felt filled with uncertainty. I knew my life was changing forever but I just didn't know how. If I could go back in time, I would say to try to find the right support and information as soon as possible because that's what eventually helped me to become empowered and feel more in control of my life with MS." - Trishna Bharadia

Advice to my newly diagnosed self: "Take your time and digest the information and your diagnosis. But most of all be positive." - Anonymous

Advice to my newly diagnosed self: "Don't panic! You are not alone, there is help and advice out there when you want it." - Anonymous

Advice to my newly diagnosed self: "Focus on what you can do, not what you can’t." - Anonymous
