Planning for the Future
Have you made a will?
Benjamin Franklin said there were only two things certain in life: death and taxes. Solicitors Cartmell & Co, supporters of the Chilterns MS Centre, can help us prepare for both of those certainties.
Worryingly, 50% of UK adults haven't written a will. A will can help reduce the amount of Inheritance Tax that might be payable on the value of the property and money you leave behind. Writing a will is especially important if you have children or other family who depend on you financially, or if you want to leave something to people outside your immediate family – or a charity.
Lasting Powers of Attorney
The primary reason for any individual to make a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is to ensure that someone is able to act on their behalf in the event of losing mental or physical capacity. It is a legal document which grants a power to someone else (an “Attorney”) to act for you and is a legal authority for your Attorney(s) to sign off documents on your behalf. It is a very powerful tool – and one on which you should always take legal advice before it is prepared and signed.
On regular dates during 2018, Jennifer Beaujeux FCILEx, Chartered Legal Executive, will base herself in a fully accessible room at the Centre to answer any questions you may have about writing your will and/or preparing LPAs. There is no charge for this 30 minute session.
